✨ Every day a holiday feeling, without taking a holiday ✨

Since we moved to Tenerife a year and a half ago, I haven’t actually taken a holiday. Even more surprising: I haven’t really felt the need for one, and I haven’t missed it.

The advantage of living on a holiday island is that the holiday feeling is never far away. At any time of the day, I can simply step outside and instantly soak up that vibe. Is it the ever-present sun, the fresh air, the nature surrounding us, or the southern culture that makes everything move just a little slower?

Maybe. But perhaps it also has to do with where we come from. After years of surviving the Belgian rat race, every day here feels like a holiday.

The rhythm of a holiday island

Secretly, we’re actually glad that the summer holidays are coming to an end. The island breathes differently when the flow of tourists slows down. Streets and beaches become quieter, and suddenly there’s more space to breathe. A short pause, until the next high season kicks off again in November.

Even though I haven’t felt a strong need for a holiday, I decided to take a week off in September. A proper break, completely away from daily routines. Tenerife still has so many hidden, untouched places waiting to be discovered. Small treasures worth exploring. Though I might just keep them to myself, because the last thing this island needs is another wave of tourists rushing to those secret spots.

The contrast with the past

What strikes me most is the contrast with before. In Belgium, we lived from one holiday to the next. Every year I counted down the days until that moment of escape, those few days when I could finally slow down and catch my breath.

Here, that feeling is present every single day.
The rat race is gone, the constant pressure is gone. Holidays are no longer an exception, they are woven into our daily lives.

And I realise more and more that this might be the greatest gift of our move.

The summer over? Not here.

So no, for me the summer isn’t “over.” Here it simply continues. Just with a little fewer tourists to share it with. And honestly, that feels even better.

And you? Did you return recharged and full of energy, or are you secretly already dreaming of your next holiday?
