Mental health is not a luxury for entrepreneurs, it is your foundation.

Since I started working as a Virtual Assistant, I’ve become more aware than ever of the importance of my mental health.

I naturally tend to pick up on what’s happening around me and I like taking care of others. It makes me deeply engaged in my work and allows me to notice the details that matter. But at the same time, it comes with a risk: taking on too much and forgetting to look after myself.

The freedom to breathe

One of the biggest advantages of working as a VA is being able to design my own workday. For me, this means the freedom to follow my energy and keep my day in balance.

When I feel the need for quiet and stillness, I give myself that space. When my focus slips, I step outside for a walk or take a short break in the fresh air. These aren’t luxuries, they’re conscious choices that keep me clear-headed and focused.

Freedom also requires boundaries

Of course, it isn’t always easy.

Because I care deeply about my work and want to support my clients the best I can, it’s tempting to just keep going, replying to that “one last email” or finishing up that task.

I’ve had to learn how to set boundaries and stick to them. Defining clear working hours, taking breaks, and really closing my laptop at the end of the day. It takes practice, but it’s the only way to safeguard my mental health in the long run.

A different pace than the rat race

In my previous jobs, I lived from one holiday to the next. I counted down the days to that short period where I could finally slow down and breathe.

Now, things feel very different. Working as a VA has taught me to stop postponing rest and to weave it into my daily routine. I don’t need to wait for a holiday anymore to recharge, I create those moments every day.

Mental health as a foundation

For me, it has become clear: taking care of my mental health is not an afterthought, it’s a foundation. The better balanced I am, the more present I can be for my clients.

And perhaps the greatest lesson I’ve learned is this: you don’t need to run yourself into the ground to deliver good work. Quite the opposite: by consciously protecting your balance, you can actually offer more.
